I got an awful shock today. It’s just the icing on the cake of a really bad day. At the moment, I’m cool, calm and collected (thanks to a rather large glass of wine). The situation has to do with my pay slip and a huge mistake.
Last month I got a shock too – paying emergency tax (the reasons would take too long to explain). Today’s shock was even bigger and much much worse for me, financially speaking. I’m fuming. At the moment I don’t know who is at fault or what the reasons are, but I’m livid. It’s just another error in a series recently – I can’t get out quickly enough. I just think I’m now being too choosy…but, I don’t want to jump from the frying pan into the fire, if you know what I mean.
Another grrrrrrrrrr for today.
On another note, I rushed home from meetings in London to get to the 18:30 Body Step class to find it was cancelled. The treadmill and cross-trainer had to suffice for me today. I think I just cancelled out the good work with my red wine… Eek. Well, needs must.
Whenever someone makes a mistake, it’s mildly annoying, but when the mistake has a longer term effect on the brand of a company – it’s a problem. I logged into email this morning to see press alerts about the company I work for. As I’m responsible for all PR in and out of the company I was shocked to see a press release by another company about them supplying to us. With a quote from a senior member of the team and a description of our company that are both sooooooo wrong – I’m stunned. We are desperately trying to change the brand image of the company from one that sits in the guts of the IT boiler room, to one that is a serious player in the board room – and mistakes like this one today can only hamper my work.
I did “Body Balance” last night again. It’s a fantastic class. The instructor is very good, she’s been teaching it for quiet a while, so she’s very flexible, and easy to follow. The current release is new – I think it was a New Year release – it’s release 39. It’s good, but it’s not as good as some of the earlier releases. I still go back to release 17 as my all time favourite, closely followed by 16 and then 15! There are some good moves in this release – and the standing strength is particularly taxing, even for us “advanced Balancers”. But, the most challenging move in this one, is the splitz… Yep, it’s challenging ok. But, it’s really really good to see the week on week improvements that the class brings to one’s flexibility. My gym features a few Body Balance classes, but only two in the evening. In order to really see the benefits – you should do this class a minimum of twice a week. Years ago I took a year out from work to do some volunteer work, travel etc. and I found myself at the gym doing as many as four Body Balance classes per week!

The best time to do one of these classes is after a good gym session or after a good aerobic workout. It focuses the mind and enables you to stretch, relax and unwind.

The weekend was quiet. BF is still recovering from pneumonia (yes, not the flu, or man flu), so a walk in the country park was our mid-afternoon activity. I was too congested to even think about the advanced aerobics class on Saturday morning, and too short of breath to run…so a walk was a great compromise. Funnily enough, my calf muscle is sore today…
Yesterday, I did other things to keep me busy – I painted the cloakroom. It’s gone from a dirty green to a bright green…not sure I’m keen on the colour, but it’s a huge improvement on what was there (it probably hadn’t been painted in 20 years). I’m now full of enthusiasm for getting the rest of the painting done. The only problem I have is that the paint fumes have a detrimental effect on my nose, breathing and sinus’ – so we’ll see how I go!
Monday morning at the office…what joy will today bring?
1. The first crocus spills it’s colour into the garden! Purple is first…which will be next?
2. Seeing my boyfriend after an absence of several days makes me realise I’ve missed him.
3. Night nurse ensures a decent night’s sleep – away from my coughing (despite its colour and its taste, it “does what it says on the tin”).
1. Abel & Cole deliver my box of fruit and veg. The first thing I do is peel a carrot and savour it’s crunchy sweetness.
2. With some of today’s fruit and some of the supermarket leftovers I make a small salad…and eat it all with organic yoghurt (fat free of course)
3. Grilling a piece of fresh tuna and watching as it changes colour – it no longer looks fishy, it’s meaty.
…since Tuesday and boy do I feel it! I’m hoping that my cold has lessened somewhat so that I can go to “Hi-lo” tomorrow AM – otherwise it will be Monday before I get back to the gym.
I did venture out yesterday, but only to Weight Watchers. I felt terrible. I did manage to lose a pound and a half – which is good, but I do need to exercise. We had some great weight losses during the class – something you expect at this time of year. Lots of new members, and lots of returning new members. I’m sure there’s a term for people who join in January but quit after they lose a few pounds, or after a slight gain. It’s a shame they don’t stick it out. When I lost my weight (63lbs) I plateau’d for 16 weeks – playing with the same pound on, pound off the whole time. I thought about giving up, about the expense of it, about what the “weighers” thought of me staying the same despite sticking religiously to the plan – but I didn’t leave. I stuck with it. I had a week away with work and thought – “I’ll do my own thing this week and get straight back to it when I got home”. That week I lost 6lb in one week. I needed a shake up. I’d gotten into a routine at home…and so I got stuck. I’m glad I stayed with it. I’m glad I still go. OK – so I am a “weigher” now, but I think I would still go to keep me on track. We have one lady who’s been with Weight Watchers for over 12 years – and has been at goal during that time. She still comes once a month to get weighed. She’s an inspiration to others!
Me? I will be focussing for the next few days to make sure this cold goes. Then I’ll get back to the gym and get my self moving again. WFH again today – it’s nice to not worry about other people getting sneezed on!
Why is it some people are such hard work on the phone? I had one of those calls this morning that left me wondering whether I said the wrong thing/called at the wrong time/whether my existence is a bother…
I work with some great people – but this particular trait in one of them is rather irksome. I never get off the phone and feel good. I talked to another colleague about it and he feels the same. Phew! So, it’s not just me then…
It does make me question my manner on the phone though and whether I’m as polite as possible even when I’d rather be elsewhere or talking to someone else.
How we communicate today is largely influenced by how we communicate in our business lives. People who sit opposite send an email rather than walk over to talk to you…the person on the floor above IMs you, and you get email in place of a phonecall from contacts outside the building. The rise and rise of social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo are having a dramatic effect on communication methods too. As I mentioned in my post yesterday, I think I have a cold coming on.., it’s now been well and truly confirmed. I woke up this morning feeling a little less than human. Doh! So much for this evening. So much for exercise. So much for sweating it out at the gym last night.
Maybe I should just go and sweat it out tonight??? I could go and do Body Step followed by Body Balance – or one or the other…
No, not an excuse not to go to the gym – but a real question – should I? Or is that asking for trouble?
